Pearls are ‘conceived’ through introducing an irritant into the oyster mollusc and waiting up to 5 years for the oyster to coat it in many, many layers of nacre, the oysters beautiful natural secretion. The time taken for the oyster to produce the perfect pearl size is governed by the type of oyster, its location and climate conditions.
The cultured Akoya Pearl is currently thought to be the most exquisite types of pearls. Not only do they possess an stunning appearance but are much less costly than they used to be. They are very popular because of their type of lustre and items fashioned from Akoya pearls are called classic.
